Smoking Cessation

Please be aware on 28th June 2023, Public Health Norfolk issued a letter detailing variations to the Primary Care contracted services. Please ensure that you have read, understood and shared these  contract variations with all staff within your pharmacy involved with service provision. These changes must be accepted or declined by an authorised person in your organisation by the 28th July 2023.

Norfolk now has one service across the area and the service is provided by Smokefree Norfolk (www.smokefreenorfolk.nhs.uk). Below there is a list of the training available to become an advisor and the contact details for the service.

This service falls into two parts:

1) Level 2 Smoking Cessation Advice:

To provide this service you will need one or more members of staff trained to Level 2. You do not have to be a Pharmacist to access this training. Indeed the remuneration model is not based on pharmacist involvement. We see this as something interesting and developmental for a Pharmacy Assistant or Technician to become involved with.

The adviser will support their client in setting a quit date, choosing pharmacotherapy, if appropriate, and will then monitor and support them for up to 12 weeks.

Payment is made for achieving a registered “4-week quit” which must be submitted to your local service support team. Further contract details available from Public Health or CPN.

Training

If a pharmacy group have a number of staff who need training and can provide a venue/room for this then please contact your local provider and they can arrange to come and do a one-day training for all your staff at once. If in doubt please get in touch with the Stop smoking service, they will be happy to discuss any concerns.

Advisers are also required to attend a yearly update meeting (if multiple advisers in one pharmacy a representative can be sent to update other advisers afterwards)

Training is now being delivered online, please contact smokefree for training dates.

2) NRT Supply Voucher Direct from Pharmacies:

You must sign up to voucher dispensing with Public Health to dispense NRT; this is available as a stand alone service if you are not a Pharmacy providing smoking cessation services.

NRT dispensing and payment should be claimed through PharmOutcomes at the time of dispensing.

All supplies must be made in line with the Norfolk NRT protocol
